FANMAIL REPLIES FOR AUGUST

A lovely long letter!

Dear Jacky,

Right now I am reading Lola Rose. Jake has just left in the story. I was silly enough to put off reading it for weeks because I heard the Mum in the story had cancer. That didn't sound too appealing to me since I had cancer when I was 1 years old. I get on fine now, but it's still really hard because everyone always stares at me because I've got 1 leg.

I love to escape into your books to get away from the not so good things in real life, and into the good things of realistic but unreal life.

I have two very adorable cats called Fergus and Amelia. Amelia (who I call Meli or chubbles) is a chubby black and ginger tortise-shell.

Fergus (who I call Fergie or troubles) is grey with black markings- A very handsome tabby, if I can say so myself!

My favourite of all your books is candyfloss. My two favourite characters are Susan and Lucky. I like it so much I chose Floss for my profile picture, but I dont look anything like her. I am short and have thin light brown hair with copper high-lights. I don't know what many people say, but I think you're really really beautiful!

I was really upset when I couldn't get one of your books out from the library because I was away from school sick. Of course I read your other books when I was sick tho! The not so good thing about when I was sick was that when I got back we had to return our library books and not get more out.

My hobbies are drawing, finding out about space (I've seen Saturn through a telescope- it was really cool), but my favourite of all is reading! (especially your books!)

I do quite a lot of sport. I swim. Today I did underwater swimming and swum about 3/4 of a length (of a 25m pool) in one breath! Plus I've just moved up a swimming class (yipee). My enemy Quincey was in the swim class I moved up from. I also rock climb. I have climbed nearly all of the top ropes at Fergs Rock Climbing (in Wellington, New Zealand). I also do horse riding. Now I am riding a lovely, white, short horse called Bilbo. I am learning to rise to the trot. It is really fun!!! Have you ever ridden a horse?

I could keep on writing to you for hours but I have to go to bed soon.

Lots of love and writing luck

Your big fan

p.s. when are you next coming to Welington?

p.s.s which bok shop will you be going to?

p.s.s.s. will you be doing special signing of your second Hetty Feather book?

p.s.s.s.s I am goign to read Hetty Feather very soon, actually, when I finish Lola Rose.

p.s.s.s.s.s. is my email one of the longest you've ever been sent? And does that make you more tempted to answer mine?

Dear Amy

Thank you very much for your lovely long email. I hope you didn't find Lola
Rose too upsetting if you finished it. I've tried to be truthful but
reassuring. It must have been very hard for you to have cancer when you
were still just a baby - but you're clearly a wonderful inspiration to any
other children with cancer because you sound such a successful ultra-sporty
girl, even if you do only have one leg now. I am NOT a sporty person at
all, but like you I do love swimming. I just do a ladylike breast stroke,
but I can just about manage to swim under water too - though probably only
half as far as you. I've never tried rock climbing and I've not tried
riding either- apart from a donkey at the seaside!

I like the sound of Fergus and Amelia. I have two cats, Jacob (grey and
white and very sweet natured, but a little timid) and Thomas (little, black,
very cuddly, with huge green eyes).

I'm glad you liked reading Candyfloss. I felt fond of Susan too.
Maybe I'll write a story about her one day, she seemed really interesting.

I like drawing too, though I'm nowhere near as good as Nick Sharratt. I
like looking up at the stars, though I haven't ever seen Saturn. I LOVE
reading. I also love New Zealand, especially Wellington, so I would be
absolutely thrilled if my publishers invite me back on another book tour.

I'm very touched that you think I'm beautiful!

Love from Jacqueline
